Industrial Domain Pricing

Recently, as I usually do between Projects, I’ve parked several domains on Sedo to “clear” IP addresses, and for the general “domain refreshing”. I decided to keep them for a while, and as most of my domains are top industrial names (chemical and pharma), they are not causing much interest in the domaining community.
Therefore I was very much surprised to receive almost an instant offer from one of the newly registered domain traders for the fineorganics.co.uk. The offer was of £50, which left me a bit surprised. Well, first of all I spent more than that in holding the domain since it’s first registration back eight years ago. I’ve used it on several occasions and what to use it further in my Projects but still a reasonable offer would have attracted my interest.
Based on the offer received I came to a following conclusion. The potential buyer is:
- Either a consumer-type developer that is interested in organic food or similar type of use.
Chemical company (surprise-surprise) that thinks I am just a “squatter” buying names for sale.
In first case I would understand the price offered “organics” is not as widely used as “organic” and therefore diminishes the value considerably.
But in second case the only thing that comes to mind is that the buyer thinks that I am a complete amateur in the Chemical Industry. Combination of words “fine organics” covers the entire high purity organic chemical compounds and therefore gives a head-start to any company that uses it.
All this just gave me an idea to start new set of posts and articles on industrial domain usage, pricing and valuation.
Consider this as a first instalment in the upcoming series of articles.
